My mom is a huge fan of taking pictures. After I was born, she took at least one album of photos of me every year and later she was always in charge of taking photos when she, my father and I travelled around or simply just stayed at home but doing something interesting. I was really curious and asked her that why she was so passionate about taking pictures.
I greeted my mother and started my interview: “why do you like to take photos so much?” She told me that “time flies really fast. I don’t have that much time to be with you and sometimes I don’t even notice but you are grown up.” When she said this, she seemed a bit nostalgic. I feel that I understand what she is trying to say by this. She worked in Qingdao, Northern China while I stayed in Hangzhou, Southern China since I was in elementary school so for many years we don’t have much time together like other families. I thought for a while and asked her again: “But sometimes we got annoyed by you, like once we were fooling around and teasing each others but you took out you phone and shoot those embarrassing moments, which makes us really unhappy. Why did you want to do that? Isn’t that supposed to leave happy memories for us?” hearing this, she was a bit worried and said: “I wasn’t mean to embarrass you two. I just wanted to record it. This is life what it is. It can’t also be happy and joyful and it won’t be. Most pictures you remember many years ago are those silly, interesting photos. You are not going to remember or feel funny when you look those typical pictures—family stands together, smile and that’s it. I really want that many years ago, you would still laugh when you look back.” She paused one second and continued: “that ‘s what I truly want.” I nodded my head and said: “I see what you mean. ” When I wanted to end our conversation, she added one last sentence:"But I know that both you and your father are not a huge fan of taking photos or being taken photos. I would try to not annoy you two." She paused again and said shyly: "But I also want you two to take pictures of me! Usually it is just the two of you in photo, but I also want to be part of the photo." I smiled and now I totally understand my mother's perspective.
Taking photos is a way my mother shows her love to my whole family.
